What is a Physician Assistant?
A physician assistant (PA) is a health care professional licensed or credentialed to practice medicine with physician supervision. As part of their responsibilities, PAs conduct physical exams, diagnose and treat illnesses, perform biopsies and treat multiple types of skin lesions, order and interpret tests, counsel patients on preventive health care, assist in surgery and write prescriptions.
Within the physician-PA relationship, PAs often make medical decisions and provide a broad range of diagnostic and therapeutic services. PAs may also teach, conduct research and do administrative work.
Education and Training
A PA’s education and training is accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA). The typical program lasts between 24 and 32 months and requires at least a four year college degree and health care experience prior to admission. Graduates receive either a Master's degree in Physician Assistant Studies or a Physician Assistant degree.
After earning their degree and before beginning to practice, PAs must pass the national certification examination administered by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants. They must also obtain state authorization to practice through state licensure, registration or certification. To maintain national certification, PAs must complete 100 hours of continuing medical education every two years and pass a recertification examination every six years.
Integral to Your Care Team
While your Annapolis Dermatology physician has ultimate responsibility for your care, your PA shares in that responsibility. They work together as a team, shoulder to shoulder, to ensure that each patient receives the very best available care and the most compassionate caring.
