Frequently Asked Questions
Can I benefit from neurotoxin injections?
Neurotoxin treatments are a temporary solution for the treatment of dynamic wrinkles. The effects of the injections last from three to six months, and most people need to have injections about two to three times a year for maintenance. Clinical studies indicate that the duration of treatment benefits increases over time, so injections are needed less often. The duration of effect varies from patient to patient and may be less effective for those over 65 years of age.
Neurotoxin injections (Botox® and Dysport®) are indicated for patients with deep wrinkles or furrows in the following areas: forehead, around the eyes (crow’s feet) and between the eyebrows. They cannot improve wrinkles due to aging and sun-damaged skin. They will not improve sagging skin or replace the need for a face or brow lift. They cannot be used for wrinkles or furrows around the nose and mouth.
What is the neurotoxin injection procedure?
Your provider will do a full assessment before discussing your areas of concern and developing a personalized treatment strategy to achieve your skin goals. Neurotoxin injections are a simple and safe procedure. A tiny micro-needle injects product into the target locations in the face, providing results that will be in full effect up to two weeks after the procedure and lasting for several months.
What is the dermal filler injection procedure?
Your provider will do a full assessment before discussing your areas of concern and developing a personalized treatment strategy to achieve your skin goals. Filler injections are a simple and safe procedure. A tiny micro-needle injects product into the target locations in the face, providing immediate results lasting 6-12 months.
It’s important to note that one syringe of filler equals 1/5 of a teaspoon, which means achieving complete correction might require more than one syringe. Rest assured, we will thoroughly review the total cost of the treatment with you before any injections are administered.
Do injections hurt?
Because the needles used are extremely fine and only a small amount of product is used, the pain associated with injections is minimal. Most patients compare the sensation with a bug bite. To minimize discomfort, we often use dermal fillers that contain a pre-mixed local anesthetic, like lidocaine, which helps to numb the treatment area as the filler is injected. Additionally, we may apply a topical numbing cream to the area before the procedure begins, further reducing potential pain.
Are there any injection side effects?
The most common side effect of any injection is temporary swelling or bruising. In some neurotoxin cases, the toxin can migrate and temporarily weaken nearby muscles. In rare cases, an eyelid can droop, or facial expressions can be asymmetric. The risk of any side effect depends on the muscles injected. Because the effects of neurotoxin injections are temporary, any side effects are completely reversible.
To help reduce swelling, we recommend placing an ice pack over the swollen area.
What about post-injection recovery?
Your provider will provide you with specific aftercare instructions. Because no sedation or local anesthetic is required, patients can resume normal activities almost immediately, including driving home or back to the office after the procedure.
After neurotoxin injections, you should 1) avoid exercise for at least 3 hours after treatment 2) avoid laying down for at least 4 hours after treatment 3) avoid flying for at least 48 hours after treatment 4) avoid facials for at least 12 hours after treatment and 5) avoid alcohol or NSAIDs for 24 hours following your treatment.
What are chemical peels?
A chemical peel is a technique for enhancing the appearance of the skin on the face, neck, or hands. It involves applying a chemical solution that initiates the exfoliation process, leading to the outer layer of skin peeling off. This reveals new skin beneath that is typically smoother and shows fewer wrinkles compared to the older skin it replaces.
Chemical peels can reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, minimize acne scars, even out skin tone and texture, and target hyperpigmentation. Results from peels are commonly noticed 1-2 weeks after treatment. Peels are well-tolerated by most patients. You may experience a slight stinging sensation, but most patients experience little to no discomfort. The side effects of chemical peels are peeling, redness, itching, and potential swelling.
